Patients describing headache symptoms is an all too common medical condition we run into at our office. Many think that the forces of spring and fall are flaring up their allergies and are the culprit behind the throbbing headaches they experience. What many patients don’t realize is that their headaches might not be from their sinuses and allergies, but from a migraine. What are the differences between a migraine and a sinus headache?

MIGRAINE HEADACHES

Migraine headaches can be severe and frequent. They are normally created by an underlying inherited neurological condition. While researchers are not 100% sure about the exact mechanism of migraines, they are believed to be triggered by things such as smells, foods, stress, etc. which cause an over excitement to the brain resulting in a headache. These migraine headaches are accompanied by an increase in sensitivity to light, sounds, and smells.

SINUS HEADACHES

Patients affected with chronic or acute sinusitis may experience what is known as a sinus headache. They will feel pressure around their eyes, cheeks, and forehead. These headaches are caused by the inflammation of the nasal passages which builds up pressure. Some of the symptoms of a sinus headache include:

  • Pain around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead
  • Stuffy nose
  • Decrease sense of smell & taste
  • Green or yellow nasal discharge
  • Fatigue

If you suspect that you are suffering from a sinus headache, here are a few home remedies to try to help reduce symptoms until you see an ENT specialist.

  • Use a humidifier
  • Take hot showers or breathe in steam from a pot of hot water.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Use a nasal saline spray.
  • Try a Neti pot.
  • Place a warm, wet towel on your face.
