Is PROPEL a Breakthrough for Sinusitis?
I am fortunate to participate in the research stage for a number of promising developments in ENT medicine and sinus surgery. Recently I have been selected as one of the few sinus surgeons in the nation who can offer a new technology for sinusitis surgery known as the PROPEL implant.
How does it work? This video tells the tale very well: an elastic structure is threaded into the sinus cavity following surgery. Once in place, it functions a bit like a stent. The implant holds the structure open, helping prevent collapse and maintain an open airway. The springy material also slowly releases a healing steroid into the surrounding sinus tissue, helping reduce inflammation, prevent polyps and create the conditions for a far more permanent and comfortable recovery. After 30 days or so, the implant fully dissolves.
