Iowa Loves Balloon Sinuplasty
Whenever a new procedure such as balloon sinuplasty appears, its rate of adoption tends to follow familiar contours. The coasts and major medical communities are likely to see the first practitioners, followed by urban communities across the nation. As one of the first surgeons in California to offer the balloon sinuplasty procedure, I have been privileged to watch it spread firsthand.
Sioux City, Iowa is the latest city to offer this groundbreaking approach to sinusitis. In a well-reported piece, the Journal outlines both the indications and the outcomes associated with balloon sinuplasty. As one doctor noted:
“We can actually slide the balloon up into the area and enlarge and dilate it as opposed to having to surgically remove tissue,” he said. “One of the fundamental principles of more modern sinus work is to preserve as much structure and mucosa as possible. When we do that, there’s quicker healing and less recovery time for the patient.”
Quicker healing, less recovery time. Four words that pretty well sum up the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, and of this procedure in particular.
