Home Remedies for Sinus Pressure
The Gawker media empire is known for many things – snarky writing, personal essays, and political activism – but rarely is it considered a hotbed of sound medical advice. This recent article manages to walk a nice line between humor and advice, however, and manages simultaneously to capture the unique frustration of sinus pressure in the process.
Covering everything from neti pots to hot soups, the list is a review of some low-tech ways you can relieve sinus pressure in the home. My favorite of the bunch is this description of what a nice hot shower can, and cannot, do:
I would recommend taking a shower, though, because you get the added bonus of blowing your nose with reckless abandon—and even if you don’t do that (you should), the mucus being dislodged from your head must go somewhere (down the shower drain). You will feel like a new person up until the exact second when you re-open the bathroom door. But for that 30 minutes it’s really worth it.
Every item in the article ends with a grudging admission that maybe the thing works just a little bit. Taken together, they should stand as a reminder that temporary fixes are just that – nice, but ultimately unsatisfying.
