Does Sinusitis Come with a Different Biome?
A biome refers to the population of microorganisms that call your body home. A growing body of scholarship has begun to zero in on human biomes to understand their diversity and medicinal properties, and determine whether changes in the biome may cause changes in human health.
One theory has been floated about chronic rhinosinusitis, which holds that sufferers may have different organisms from other people. Now researchers have conducted a controlled experiment to test this theory. Their conclusion: “These findings support the theory that in some cases CRS results from an immune hyperresponsiveness to commensal organisms.”
In other words, although some minor differences were reported, it seems that sinusitis sufferers do not have qualitatively different biomes from the rest of us. Instead they may have a heightened immune response, which is probably responsible for the sinusitis.
It is interesting news which should yield some new avenues for research. In the meantime if you have frequent sinus infections and want to resolve the problem for good, you can contact my sinus surgery offices today.
